The Hidden Treasures of Sri Lanka

Set in the Indian Ocean in South Asia, the tropical island nation of Sri Lanka has a history dating back to the birth of time.  It is a place where the original soul of Buddhism still flourishes and where nature’s beauty remains abundant and unspoilt.

Few places in the world can offer such a remarkable combination of stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, captivating cultural heritage and unique experiences within such a compact location.  Within a mere area of  65,610 kilometres lie 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 1,330 kilometres of coastline, nearly 500,000 acres of lush tea estates, 250 acres of botanical gardens, and a culture that extends back to over 2,500 years.

Come explore this island of magical proportions, once known as Serendib, Taprobane, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, and Ceylon, with the Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art. We will be accompanied by our guest lecturer, Professor Nandadeva. It will prove to be a journey of enchantment, with surprises one after another.

Professor B.D. Nandadeva is the Professor of Visual Arts & Design and Performing Arts at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. He is also the Consultant Director on Mural Painting Conservation, Central Cultural Fund, which is Sri Lankan Government’s custodian organization of the six World Cultural Heritage sites. Professor Nandadeva was also Chairman of the Panel for Intangible Cultural Heritage, Sri Lanka Arts Council in the Ministry of Education. Outside Sri Lanka, Professor Nandadeva has held teaching or research positions at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, England; Sojo University in Kumamoto, Japan; University of Delaware and the Smithsonian Institute in the USA; University of Canberra, Australia; and University of Tessaloniki, Greece. Professor Nandadeva will accompany our group for the 6 UNESCO Heritage sites, and will give us in depth explanation at each attraction.
